The Wooden Spoon National Schools Sevens Tournament is celebrating its 68th year in 2006. This year the event is kindly sponsored by DHL with additional support from Gerrard, Gilbert, Hitachi and Office Watercoolers.
A total of 597 school teams will be participating in the weeklong event which comprises 1150 matches fought out on 25 pitches including the Richardson-Evans, Wimbledon Playing Fields and Rosslyn Park FC. Girls and boys between the ages of 13 and 19 get the opportunity to compete for 7 different titles against schools from all corners of the UK. 180 referees take part in this unique tournament.
This year for the first time, teams are participating from the Ukraine (Under 13 team), South Africa (two Under 18 teams), Hungary (Under 16 Girls) and Transylvania (Under 13 and Under 18 teams).
Format of The 2006 Tournament
20th March Preliminary rounds of the Preparatory and Junior Schools All matches played in SW London on Wimbledon Common & Merton Extension Playing Fields: Kingston By-pass
21st March Quarter finals onwards of Preparatory and Junior Schools - all matches at on the pitches as above-NOT at Rosslyn Park Preliminary rounds of the Festival (1 term rugby schools) All matches on Wimbledon Common & Merton Common Extension Playing Fields (as above)
22nd March Quarter finals onwards of the Festival - all matches at Rosslyn Park Preliminary rounds of the Colts (U16) All matches on Wimbledon Common etc: as above
23rd March Quarter finals onwards of the Colts (U16) All matches on Wimbledon Common etc: as above Preliminary rounds of the Girls and the Open (2 term U18) All matches on Wimbledon Common etc: as above
24th March Quarter finals onwards of the Girls and Open Rosslyn Park FC Old Boys match Millfield v Challenger (tbc) 5.00pm
